James is a London-based director, theatre practitioner, and filmmaker, dedicated to using storytelling as a tool for social change and amplifying voices that are too often unheard. His work spans stage and screen, and consistently seeks to foster dialogue, challenge perceptions, and create space for communities to reflect, connect, and imagine new futures.
With over a decade of experience, James has worked extensively with young people and community groups across London, Bristol, and the South West. His practice is grounded in care, collaboration, and creativity, and he specialises in co-creating bold, original work that speaks to the complexities of contemporary life — often blending text, movement, and film.
James’s work is shaped by long-term relationships and trusted partnerships. He worked with the Bristol Old Vic Young Company for seven years, where he directed and supported a wide range of productions with the Young Company and led engagement projects with local schools and communities. He has worked regularly with the Lyric Hammersmith on projects supporting young people, including those navigating exclusion or underrepresented in traditional arts spaces.
As a filmmaker, James is interested in the cinematic potential of youth perspectives. He has made several short films with and for young people, and designed projection and screen-based elements for live performance. He was a resident artist at Tobacco Factory Theatres in collaboration with Joseff Harris and FEN, creating a dual-screen installation that explored modern relationships through movement and sound. His ongoing work bridges theatre and film, and he is currently developing projects that incorporate community-led storytelling and genre experimentation.
James has created work with companies including: Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory Theatres, Young Vic, National Theatre, Headlong, Lyric Hammersmith, Roundhouse, Company Three, Boundless Theatre, The Prince’s Trust, Actors Touring Company, Wardrobe Ensemble, Peer Power, Action on Disability, Sharp Teeth, Tremolo Theatre, Insane Root and FEN.
He is passionate about making the arts more accessible, championing inclusive practice, and nurturing the next generation of storytellers.
